Sermonettes of Swami Sivananda

                                                                        The Soul

You are the Master of Yourself
You are the architect of your own fate and fortune and master of your destiny. You can do and undo things through discrimination. You can attain God by right thinking, right feeling and right acting. You can destroy all unholy desires, break old habits and cultivate new habits simply by the power of your will. You can change your nature and elevate others to the status of Divinity by your spiritual force. You can achieve sanguine success in all your attempts as failure will be unknown to you.
Master the Thoughts
Performance of one’s duties brings happiness, quick evolution and freedom. Events happen in succession, order and in perfect harmony. Desire, thought and action always go together. It is thought that moves the body to action – bad thoughts leads to bad actions. Control the thoughts and desires. Watch your thoughts carefully and do not entertain evil thoughts. Develop passion for God-realisation and attain the goal of life.

Sermonettes of Swami Sivananda

The Soul
Hear the Inner Voice
Do not be guided and influenced by public opinion. March boldly and cheerfully in the path of Truth, consulting your conscience and hearing the inner sweet voice of the Soul. Keep company with only people who have the same ideals as yourself. Share what you have with the less fortunate and serve the sick. Unfold the Divinity hidden in the chambers of your heart. Always repeat the Lord’s name and associate the idea of purity, infinity, eternity and immortality when you think of God.
Knowledge gives Freedom
The practice of selfless service destroys sins and impurities and brings about the purity of the mind. The knowledge of God dawns in a pure mind and is the only direct means to attain freedom. Knowledge certainly destroys ignorance as light destroys the thickest darkness.
Be absorbed wholeheartedly in your work giving a 100% effort, having complete confidence and not caring for the results. Be always cheerful and do not think of the past. Keep a cool and balanced mind, being bold and courageous. You are bound to succeed in any undertaking. This is the secret of success.

Attach importance...

Happiness is a journey, not a destination

Life doesn't always give you what you ask for, but it always gives you what you need

For what lies behind you and what lies in front of you matters little when compared to what lies within you

Never do anything because you have to. The only reason to do something is because you want to and because you know it is the right thing for you to do

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living/7 - Robin Sharma

The Symbol:                              The Path of Diamonds
The Virtue:                                 Embrace the Present
The Wisdom:                             Live in the “NOW”. Savour the gift of the present
Never sacrifice happiness for achievement. Enjoy the journey and live each day as your last
The Techniques:                       Live your Children's childhood
Practise gratitude. Grow your Destiny. We are all here for some special reason. Stop being a prisoner of your past, become the architect of your future.
The Timeless Secret of Lifelong Happiness
The Sumo wrestler, who walked out of the lighthouse in the middle of a beautiful garden with nothing more than a pink wire cable covering his private parts, slipped on a shiny, gold stopwatch and fell to the ground. He finally regained consciousness when the marvellous fragrance of the yellow roses reached his nostrils. He then jumped to his feet in delight and was astonished to see, on his left, a long winding path, studded with millions of tiny diamonds. He took this very same path and in doing so, lived happily ever after.
We must learn to live in the present, the “now”. The past is water under the bridge and the future is a distant sun on the horizon of our imagination. Focus and centre your energy in a project that you know is important to you. This will be the only thing that matters to you in that very moment. Everything else, the worries, work, the bills etc. don't count. Being engaged in a pursuit that truly challenges you is the surest route to personal satisfaction. This is the principle the “path of diamonds” in the fable symbolizes.
Today is the day to enjoy the fruit of your efforts
Today is the day to seize the moment and live a life that soars
Today is the day to live from your imagination and harvest your dreams

Just as the Sumo wrestler found lasting fulfilment and joy by walking “the path of diamonds”, you too can have the life you deserve the very moment you believe that your current path also has diamonds and other priceless treasures. Stop spending so much time chasing life's big pleasures while you neglect the little ones. Slow things down and enjoy the beauty and sacredness of all that is around you. Never put off happiness for the sake of achievement. Live your children's childhood. Be there for your kids in their formative years and beyond. Enjoy the special moments that everyday offers because today, this day is all you have. There is a huge difference between making a lot of money and making a lot of life. When you start spending even five minutes a day practising the art of gratitude, you will cultivate the richness of living that you are looking for. When you savour the “now”, you kindle the fire of life that allows to grow your destiny. Simply follow the path of your dreams, in full expectation of the bounty that is certain to flow. This will bring you to your divine destination.

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living/6 - Robin Sharma

The Symbol:                                     The fresh Yellow Roses
The Virtue:                                       Selflessly serve others
The Wisdom:           The quality of your life ultimately comes down to the quality of your contribution. To cultivate the sacredness of each day, live to give by elevating the lives of others, your life reaches its highest dimensions
The Techniques:                               Practise daily acts of kindness. Give to those who ask.
Cultivate richer relationships; the noblest thing you can do is to give to others. Start focusing on your higher purpose.
The Ultimate Purpose of Life
When all is said and done, no matter what you have achieved or what fortunes you have amassed, the quality of your life will come down to the quality of your contribution.
The fresh yellow roses remind you of an ancient Chinese proverb, “a little bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives you roses”. The meaning is clear – when you work to improve the lives of others, you indirectly elevate your own life in the process. When you take care to practise random acts of kindness daily, your own life becomes far richer and more meaningful. We need to change our worldly perception, from seeing ourselves purely as individuals to being as part of a collective. We enter the world with nothing and we are destined to leave with nothing. This being the case, then our real purpose must be to contribute to society in a meaningful way.
Mediate each morning on the good you will do for others during your day. It may take the form of words of praise to those who least expect it, small tokens of affection to family members for no reason at all, all add up to a much more wonderful way to live.
Cultivate richer relationships. Friends add humour, beauty and fascination to life. A person with three solid friends is very wealthy indeed. Friends make you smile, keep you humble and are there to help you whenever you are down.

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living/5 - Robin Sharma

The Symbol:                                  The stopwatch
The Virtue:                                     Respect your time
The Wisdom:                                 Time is your most precious commodity and it is non-renewable.
Focus on your priorities and maintain balance. Simplify your life
The Techniques:                            The ancient rule of 20
Have the courage to say NO
The “Deathbed” mentality
Those who use time wisely from an early age are rewarded with rich, productive and satisfying lives.
Your most precious commodity
The naked 900lb, 9' tall Sumo wrestler with a pink wire cable covering his private parts, slips on a shiny , gold stopwatch that someone has left many years earlier in the beautiful garden.
Our most important commodity is Time. Busy, productive people are highly efficient with their time. Time mastery allows you more time to do the things you love to do and which are truly meaningful to you. Guard time well; remember it is a non-renewable resource. “Failing to plan is planning to fail”.
Ancient rule of 20: 80% of the results you achieve in your life comes from only 20% of the activities that occupy your time. Enlightened people are priority driven and this is the secret of “time mastery”. When you plan and have balance in the use of your time, you not only are more productive but far happier with your efforts. Life is like a fat strip of bacon – you have to separate the meat from the fat in order to be the master of your time.
Watch out for “time thieves”- people who always seem to want your time and attention. Learn to say NO: Having the courage to say No to the little things in life, will give you the power to say YES to the big things.
Most productive people have cultivated the habit of doing the things that less productive people don't like doing, even though they too might not like doing them. Those, who are masters of their time, live simple lives. Living a rich life with accomplishment and contribution does not necessarily come through sacrifice of peace of mind. Too many people are dreaming of some magical rose garden on the horizon rather than enjoying the one growing in their back yard. The best time to plant a tree was 40 years ago. The second best time is today. Don't waste time.
Develop a “deathbed mentality”: live everyday as if it were your last. Push yourself to do more and experience more. Harness your energy to start expanding your dreams – become the architect of your future.
Knowing the Self: We are all spiritual beings having a human experience. We are no longer in this world, this world is in us. We are ONE with our Creator. At death, we can only take our conscience. Listen to your conscience. Let it guide you as it knows what is right. It will tell you that your calling in life is ultimately selfless service to others in some form or another.
Remember, the power of laughter, like music, is a wonderful tonic for life's stresses and strains. Laughter opens your heart and soothes your soul.

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living/4 - Robin Sharma

The Symbol:                              Pink wire cable – Sumo wrestler
The Virtue:                                 Live with discipline
The Wisdom:                             Discipline is built by consistently performing small acts of courage. Will power is the essential virtue of a fully actualised life.
The Techniques:                        Mantra's / creative envisioning
The vow of silence:                   Wage war against the weaker thoughts. They will see that they are unwanted and will leave like unwelcome visitors.
The Power of Discipline
The pink wire cable covering the private parts of the Sumo wrestler serves to remind us of the power of self-control and discipline in building a richer, happier and more enlightened life. A wire cable comprises of tiny wires placed on top of the other. Each wire is weak on its own but together it becomes tougher than even iron. Self-control and will power is similar to this. An abundance of will power and discipline are the chief attributes of all those with strong character and who lead wonderful lives. They will give you the freedom to choose what is right over what seems pressing or urgent.
Control your thoughts:              You control your mind
Control your mind:                    You control your life
Control your life:                       You become master of your destiny
Words have much power and are great influencers. By filling your mind with words of hope, kindness and courage, you become all these. Sit in quiet surroundings with eyes closed and mind still, repeat over and over this affirmation:
“I am more than I appear to be; all the world's strength and power rests inside me”
As you utter these words, see yourself as a disciplined person fully in control of your mind, body and spirit. Startling results will surely come your way. Also, do things that you don't like doing eg. making up your bed. By getting into the habit of exerting your will, you will cease to be a slave to your weaker impulses.
Vow of silence for an extended period of time. Each time the urge to speak arises, you actively curb this impulse and remain quiet. Your will has no mind of its own and awaits your instructions that will spur it into action. The more control you exert over it, the more powerful it will become. Imagine if you had to triple your will power – more efficient with your time, erase the worry habit altogether and rekindle the drive and energy for living that have been lacking. Start off small, a step at a time. By building on the small to achieve the great, you will boost your self-confidence, inspiring you to reach greater heights. It feels good when you have realised a goal that you had set yourself. Momentum will then motivate you to keep exploring your infinite potential.

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living/3 - Robin Sharma

The Symbol:                                       The Sumo Wrestler
The Virtue:                                          Practise “Kaizen”
The Wisdom:                                       Self Mastery is the DNA of Life Mastery
Success on the outside begins within. Enlightenment comes through the consistent cultivation of your mind, body and soul
The Techniques:                                 Do the things you fear most
The Universe favours the brave. When you resolve to lift your life to the highest level, the strength of your Soul will guide you to a magical place with magnificent treasures.
The Ancient Art of Self Leadership
Out walks a 9' tall, 900lb Sumo wrestler from the door of the lighthouse. This Sumo wrestler represents a very important element in the life changing system.
“Kaizen” is a Japanese word meaning constant and never-ending improvement. By the very nature of his profession, the Sumo wrestler has to practise Kaizen to be successful. If we can practise Kaizen daily in our lives, can you imagine how our fulfilling our lives will be? “Self-mastery is the DNA of Life mastery”. Take time to master your mind, care for the body and nourish the soul. You will develop more richness and vitality in your life. How can a person lead a corporation if he cannot lead himself or how can you possibly do good if you don't even feel good?
You need to build strength of character, develop mental toughness and live with courage. These attributes will lead to a life filled with achievement, satisfaction and inner peace. When you dare to get out of your circle of comfort and explore the unknown, you start to liberate your true potential, this being the first step to self-mastery.
You practise the art of Kaizen by pushing yourself daily. Set aside 1 hour each day for 30 consecutive days and you will continue this practice as you experience positive results. Do the things you fear the most and be the person you dream of being. When you conquer your fears, you conquer your life. Remember fear is merely a mental monster you have created, nothing more than a negative stream of consciousness.
10 Rituals for radiant living – find a quiet spot and continue at the same time each day.
1) Solitude – Self renewal. Being alone and immersed in silence creates a deep sense of well-being, inner peace and boundless energy.
2) Physicality – Vigorous excise / walking. Develop the art of effective breathing through Yoga.
3) Live nourishment – Vegetarian diet: fresh vegetables, fruit and grains
4) Abundant knowledge – Focus on those things your conscience and heart tell you to do. Read regularly, material which will enhance your mind.
5) Personal reflection – Inner contemplation. At the end of each day consider your actions, identify the wrongs and learn from them. You will advance on the path of self-mastery.
6) Early awakening – 6hrs. sleep is sufficient to be healthy and alert. Upon awakening, think positive thoughts, offer a prayer of thanks and gratitude for all you have. Laughter is a great soul medicine.
7) Music – changes your mood and motivates you.
8) Spoken word / Mantra – a phrase that is designed to free the mind eg.“I am strong, able and calm”. The words you say to yourself affect your self- image and your self-image determines what actions you take. Mantra's help your self-image.
9) Congruent character – Strengthening your character affects the way you see yourself and the actions you take.
10) Simplicity - live a simple life and focus on those activities that are truly meaningful to you. Your life will be uncluttered, rewarding and exceptionally peaceful.
You sow a thought, you reap an action. Reap an action, you sow a habit. Sow a habit, you reap a character. Sow a character, you reap your destiny.
Live life with compassion, humility, truth, love, courage and non-violence. Remember, the end of education is character.

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living/1 - Robin Sharma

The Symbol:                                   the Magnificent Garden
The Virtue:                                     Master your Mind
The Wisdom:                                  Cultivate your Mind – it will blossom beyond your expectations. The quality of your Life is determined by the quality of your thoughts. There are no mistakes, only lessons to be learnt. See setbacks as opportunities for personal expansion and spiritual growth.
The Techniques:
                         The heart of the Rose
                         Opposition thinking
                         The secret of the Lake
The secret of Happiness is “simple” - find out what you truly love to do and then direct all your energy towards doing it. Once you do this, abundance flows into your life and all your desires are filled with ease and grace. He who selflessly serves the most, reaps the most; emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. This is the way to inner peace and outer fulfilment.

A Most Extraordinary Garden
In the fable, the garden is a symbol for the Mind. Most good gardeners will weed regularly and ensure no contamination ever enters their gardens but yet look at the toxic waste we put into the fertile gardens of our minds every single day: the worries and the anxieties, the fretting about the past and the brooding about the future and those self-created fears that wreak havoc within our inner world. All these drain the mind and much of its power.
To live life to the fullest, you must stand guard at the gate of your garden and let only the very best information enter. You truly cannot afford the luxury of a negative thought. Mental mastery comes through conditioning. We all have the power to determine what we think about in any given moment. No matter what happens to you in your life, you alone have the capacity to choose your response to it. By controlling the thoughts that you think and the way you respond to events of your life, you begin to create your destiny. All events, be it positive or negative, simply experience them, celebrate them and learn from them. The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. You must persist in exercising your mind positively and it will do all wonderful things for you. Focused personal reflection each day impacts on the quality of your life.
Daily exercise:           Heart of the Rose
Find a quiet room and a fresh rose. Stare at the centre of the rose, its heart. Notice its colour, texture and design. Savour its fragrance and think only about this rose. Initially, other thoughts will distract you but in time, through perseverance, your mind will grow strong and disciplined and your focus will only be the rose. This will be the first indication that you are taking back control of the fortress of your mind. It will then focus on what you command it to focus on and become a wonderful servant...
Opposition thinking: Replace a negative thought immediately with a positive thought.
Secret of the Lake: You are looking into the water at the edge of a lake and seeing your reflection. Envisage your dreams becoming a reality. You will become the person you mentally see yourself become. The mind works through pictures. Pictures affect your self- image and this in turn affects the way you feel, act and achieve. See yourself as you want to be. Run your own race. It doesn't matter what others say about you. What is important is what you say to yourself.
Mental fitness: Success on the outside indeed begins with success on the inside. By changing your thoughts and attitude, you can positively change your life
Our passion must in some way, improve or serve the lives of others. Once you find out what your life's work is, your world will become alive with a limitless reservoir of energy and enthusiasm.

The 7 Timeless Virtues of Enlightened Living
        Symbol                                              Virtue
The Magnificent Garden                                              Master your Mind
The Towering Lighthouse                                          Follow your Purpose
The Sumo Wrestler                                                      Practise “Kaizen”
The pink Wire cable                                                    Live with Discipline
The gold Stopwatch                                                    Respect your Time
The fragrant Roses                                                     Selflessly serve others
The path of Diamonds                                                Embrace the present
These 7 Virtues, for a life overflowing with inner peace, joy and a wealth of spiritual gifts, were contained in a mystical fable. Every element of this fable embodies a timeless principle for radiant living and has great depth of meaning. It has a purpose and that the principles it symbolises are not only powerful – they are highly practical.
Close your eyes and picture the following scene in your mind's eye ….
You are sitting in the middle of a magnificent, lush, green garden filled with the most spectacular flowers you have ever seen. The environment is supremely tranquil and silent. Savour the sensual delights of this garden and feel as if you have all the time in the world to enjoy this natural oasis. As you look around you see that in the centre of this magical garden stands a towering, red lighthouse, six stories high. Suddenly, the silence of the garden is disturbed by a loud creaking as the door at the base of the lighthouse opens.
Out stumbles a nine-foot tall, nine-hundred pound Japanese sumo wrestler who casually wanders into the centre of the garden. The Japanese sumo wrestler is almost totally naked with the exception of a pink wire cable covering his private parts. As this sumo wrestler starts to move around the garden, he finds a shiny gold stopwatch which someone had left behind many years earlier. He slips it on, and falls to the ground with an enormous thud. The sumo wrestler is rendered unconscious and lies there, silent and still. Just when you think he has taken his last breath, he awakens, perhaps stirred by the fragrance of some fresh yellow roses blooming nearby. Energised, he jumps swiftly to his feet and intuitively looks to his left. He is startled by what he sees. Through the bushes at the very end of the garden, he observes a long winding path covered by millions of sparkling diamonds. Something seems to instruct him to take the path, and to his credit, he does. This path leads him down the road of everlasting joy and eternal bliss.
Never overlook the power of simplicity – this story may not be a sophisticated discourse but there is a universe of sensibility in its message and a purity in its purpose.

Spreading the Message of Pure Love in the New World/4 - Prof. G. Venkataraman

Swami says “From God you have come and to God you return. Whilst on Earth, your true nature must show up in your various actions. Your true nature is represented by the Atmic component rather than by the Body or Mind. Since this aspect within you is essentially Divine, your actions must surely be good, based on Truth, Righteousness and Love.
Humans are not born to be greedy, enjoy sense gratification, self-indulgence, pleasure seeking etc. We have been exposed to these ideas by those who want you to spend your hard earned money in the “entertainment industries”. Look what happens at Christmas time. So much time is spent on shopping, partying etc. and very little on reflecting on the sacrifice made by Jesus and the remarkable teachings He gave.
It is time to stop listening to advertisers and utilize our time profitably for the gain of our communities and for the promotion of peace. We must give more time to our children and families. When family ties loosen, then the family, which has for thousands of years been the brick of human communities everywhere, would collapse.
We are forever at the mercy of problems / circumstances that we ourselves have created, to our detriment. People are not only becoming excessively obese but highly prone to diabetes.
Everything essential is expensive, including food, housing, education, health care etc. Most people are deeply in debt as a result. Depression is common nowadays, so is the rate of suicide.
Our “fast and racy” lifestyle - we always seem to be in a hurry and have even less spare time. We must all learn to stop, pause, and take a moment to think deeply over what all this means. Is this why God made us? The Bible says that God created man in His own image. Is this how God lives, with two cell phones and out of a suitcase all the time? What is the example the Son of God set, coming on Earth two thousand years ago? What did Jesus die on the cross for? Why is it that more children know about the latest video games and movie star gossip, than the parables that Jesus taught?
As Swami constantly reminds us, God has given us life in the human form for a much nobler purpose than merely for making money, partying, and ruining our health in a hundred different ways, all for the sake of a few “kicks and some excitement”. Our real role models must be the saints and sages of all lands and all religions, for they all taught one lesson, the lesson of love (peace, compassion, sacrifice and selfless service)
Swami says that Nature is our Universal Mother and must be loved and respected in all ways. Unfortunately, we pollute the air, water and land recklessly and constantly, cut down forests and hunting down to extinction certain species of animal. Who gave us these rights and whose creation are these in the first place?
Meanwhile, we have a global population explosion, from a current 6.5 billion to a predicted 9 billion by 2050. We would need a lot more food and water to cater for an increased population. But land availability for agriculture and water availability are both on the decline.
In short, the time has come to re-assess and change our thinking and our lifestyle. Let us endorse and practice the teachings of whatever religion we belong to. All religious principles include peace, non-violence, truth, love, sacrifice and selfless service.
Pure Love must also shine in our actions. Swami often tells us “YOUR LIFE MUST BE MY MESSAGE”
Every single action of ours must breathe and radiate Pure Love. Swami advises us to recite the following prayer daily in reverence to Mother Nature.
                                                                             O Universal Mother
I pray to You to flood my Heart with Pure Love
Let this Love then stimulate Pure Thoughts in my Mind
Thereafter, let those Pure Thoughts of the Mind be converted into good and loving words spoken by me
And, also good, selfless and loving actions performed by my body,
For the good of Everyone, Everywhere!

Spreading the Message of Pure Love in the New World/3 - Prof. G. Venkataraman

Why Pure Love must govern all our Actions
In days gone by, Spirituality was largely about the individual becoming saintly and liberated from all kinds of worldly wants and desires. This quest must not stop there at the individual level but as a continuation. Swami explains that our actions are almost always in response to circumstances related to the external world. This means that our actions have to be in this world but does not necessarily have to be determined by worldly considerations. Rather, our actions must be governed by Eternal Values viz. Truth, Peace, Righteousness, Love, Non-violence etc. Swami refers to these eternal values as Pure Love.
While worldly love (love between parents, love between a mother and child etc) is good, it is born out of Pure Love and is restricted at a body level. Further, it is diluted with attachment and selfishness.
Consider this scenario - a mother with her own son and a step-son. She would be very partial to her own son and treat her step-son with less consideration. Pure Love is free of any trace of selfishness and self-interest.

Pure Love is the only way to tackle global problems humanity faces today.
Climate change:
Problem began when people in rich countries consumed enormous amounts of energy year after year, largely for maintaining a very high standard of living. All that reckless and non-stop energy consumption pumped huge quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, in turn causing a rise in global temperature. For years, few people paid attention to all this; in fact, most people did not believe in climate change.
Since standard of living is connected with earning money, people in not so rich countries also tried to earn money in their own way. Indonesians began burning huge sections of their forests so that they could plant palm trees for making palm oil which had a big export market. Similarly, in many South American countries, people began cutting huge chunks of the precious Amazon forest so that they could do farming, set up industries etc.
These two regions, really Gods gift to humanity, are like the two lungs of the planet Earth. When their size began to shrink, it only helped in increasing the carbon burden on the atmosphere. And then came the rapid development of China and to a lesser extent India, which accelerated the carbon dumping.
You might ask what has this got to do with Pure Love? Lets look at what politicians and big business leaders are doing about climate change problem. Big business is clearly not in favour of strict control on carbon emission; carbon is emitted all over the place, by power plants that produce electricity, by airplanes, automobiles and so on.
Trillions of dollars have been invested in all these industries, and if controls have to be imposed, big business will be severely affected with its profits sharply declining. To make sure of their investments, corporate executives give politicians lots of money to ensure that they apply pressure on their Governments so as to safe guard big business. They also pump huge amounts of money into the media; the public are misled into believing the climatic change problem is not as critical as made out to be. To date, meetings held by various Governments representatives have yielded no real solutions to this problem.
When greed and self-interest dominate strongly it blinds what Swami calls Fundamental Discrimination - the name given to the capacity to judge objectively between right and wrong, between what is good for all and what would benefit a few at the expense of harm and even danger to many.

What do Swamis teachings tell us as a solution to this problem?
1) At a worldly level, we all appear different but we all are One because the same Atmic principle is in each of us. Remember the saying - “Bulbs are many but the current is one”. Swami also quotes Jesus “All are One; therefore be alike to everyone”.
2) We must always reject solutions based on the idea we are different; these are never satisfactory and soon lead to differences, enmity and even conflict. Solutions always based on selfishness, self-interest and advantage a few, forgetting the masses.
3) The rich nations must not seek solutions that favour them alone as this is not a long term strategy for success.
